The rhyming text reads well, the story idea (or ideas) is fun, and the artwork is colorful and engaging. Originally published in 1993, and just reprinted in this 25th Anniversary Edition this year (2019), Yikes!: In Seven Wild Adventures, Who Would You Be? is an entertaining book. At the end of the book, the resolution hinted at in each selection is given. Presenting seven different settings - a Stormy Night at Sea, the Wild West, the Big Top, the Frozen North, a Transylvanian Castle, the Milky Way, and a Steaming Jungle - the narrator introduces a cast of characters, and then describes the crazy adventures they get into, some as heroes, some as villains.
Alison Lester, the author/illustrator responsible for such Australian picture-book classics as Imagine and Are We There Yet?, here spins a series of poetic mini stories.
